Weight Loss & Your Metabolic Rate

1way | October 25, 2009

Various studies have concluded that your metabolism begins to wane every year roughly from your mid 20’s onwards. With that in mind it doesn’t take a massive mental calculation to realise that if you carry on eating the same amount of food with the same amount of calorific value without increasing your exercise levels, your weight is unfortunately bound to increase.

You may be labouring under the misconception that you cannot do anything about your metabolic rate. You read somewhere that it is purely hereditary and have decided that being fat is your destiny. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Everybody has the means within them to increase their metabolism.

The best way to increase your metabolic rate is to exercise more. The more demands you put on your body for energy the faster your metabolism works. Your body can burn calories from carbohydrates, proteins or fats. Needless to say you would rather your body burn fat calories but your body is very good at minimising waste. It will only burn fat calories when it needs energy.

Furthermore there are specific events in your life when your fat cells are likely to increase in size and multiply. One of these periods is during puberty and there is nothing you can do about that. Eating excessively during these unusual periods can make it more difficult to get rid of these fat cells later on in life.

This would go some way to explain why some of your friends seem like they can lose weight without even thinking about it while your own weight loss attempts seem to go more slowly.

Fat cells are all part of the grand human design and they have the ability to decrease or increase in size as we lose or gain weight. Realising this fact will help you approach your weight loss goals with a more realistic attitude.
